    What are ischemic ulcers/pressure sores?

Our skin is our most important organ. It is our first line of defence against infection. Our circulation system nourishes our skin by bringing oxygen enriched blood to the skin and the underlying muscles. Changes of the bodies shape interfere with our circulation e.g. sitting or lying for prolonged periods of time without changing our position. Ongoing interference with the blood flow can kill our skin and muscles.

Pressure Sores are caused by (a) unevenly high pressure over small areas of the body, typically shoulders and hips and (b) inactivity often due to paralysis, injury or anesthesis.

By providing correct support and removing areas of high pressure, the ORO Advanced Sleep System with its recessed mattress can help prevent pressure sores and can help promote healing of sores that have already occurred.

Pressure Sores can result in infections and may extend the recovery process after medical treatment. They also hinder restful sleep and this may reduce the bodies own recovery and the effectiveness of its immune function.

Our skin compromises of three layers:

    • The outermost layer, visible to the eye, called the epidermis
    • The middle layer, called the dermis
    • The innermost layer, called the subcutaneous

While we are in our younger years, we do not have wrinkles because the skin does a great job of stretching and holding in moisture. The dermis has an elastic quality thanks to fibers called elastin that keep the skin looking and feeling young. A protein in the dermis called collagen also helps to prevent wrinkles.

However, over time, the dermis loses both collagen and elastin, so skin gets thinner and has trouble getting enough moisture to the epidermis. The fat in the subcutaneous layer that gives skin a plump appearance also begins to disappear, the epidermis starts to sag, and wrinkles form.

There is no magic age (like 30 or 40) when everyone suddenly gets wrinkles. Some people in their 20s have little wrinkles around their eyes from squinting or spending too much time in the sun.

Other people may be in their 50s or 60s before you can even see a wrinkle. This is usually because they have taken good care of their skin over the years and may have more sebum - the skin's natural oil. They may also have "good genes" - which means their family members don't have many wrinkles. Eventually, however, everyone will have at least a few wrinkles. It's a natural part of the aging process.

Using the Oro pillow the face is not submerged too deeply into it which would otherwise cause the face to distort, as it does using standard pillows and pillow cases which always crumple up during the night. This is a very important feature of the Oro Sleep System where millions of women are concerned.
