A proper assessment by a suitably qualified professional is important, in order to make sure that the correct piece of equipment is chosen.

    High and Low Profiling Beds

Profiling beds which are electrically adjusted enable the user's position to be changed without strain for anyone involved. The most common profiling beds are three and four part. Either of these will allow the backrest / pillow area of the bed to be raised, enabling the user to be more upright, while also lifting an area under the knees, to stop the user slipping down in the bed. A four part bed can be more comfortable, as it keeps the bottom horizontal while raising the knees. Two part beds just have a rising headrest area, while five part profiling beds offer more variability in the head / back support area.

Whilst a profiling bed will give greater independence to a user, the needs of the staff also need to be a consideration as it is those people who will assist the patient with their day-to-day tasks but will also help to prevent strain injuries. Beds are sturdily constructed for durability using materials which are easy to clean. Good ground clearance allows for the use of hoists etc.

    Advantages of a profiling system:

    • Change position without manual involvement, risk of injury to the carer is eliminated, independence and decorum of the user are maintained
    • Could be possible for someone to get out of bed unaided as the bed can raise you into sitting position first
    • Respiratory and circulatory difficulties can be eased
    • Using a hoist is easier
    • Our profiling beds have a height adjustment, enabling the carer to work at a safe height when applying treatments or even moving to a stretcher

Mattresses for use on profiling beds are available from OroMed and are tailor made to suit the person using the bed. There are foam and sprung versions available, however, the ultimate in comfort for a person who has limited mobility and spends a great deal of time in bed is a memory foam pressure relief mattress and this should always be chosen when selecting a mattress for that purpose.
